Our Next Meeting
What: Meeting of the Cherokee County Historical Society.
When: Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 6:00PM.
Where: The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce meeting room at the Gadsden State Cherokee Campus, 801 Cedar Bluff Road, Centre, AL. 35960.
Why: Bi-monthly meeting. We will have a guest speaker. We will also present plaques to the winners of last years awards:
Minnix Award: Doris Pearson
Mann Award: David Crum(Director of the Cherokee County Historical Museum) and Scott Wright(author of Fire on the Mountain: The Undefeated 1985 Sand Rock Wildcats).
Presidents Award: Winner will be announced at the meeting.
Our Guest Speaker:
George Cobb, D.D. is a retired United Methodist Minister whose hobby is living history. For the past six years, he has served as Chaplin of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association, which sponsors the annual 15-day re-enactment of the March to King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War. He portrays the Rev. Samuel Doak who challenged and inspired the Overtonmountain Men at Sycamore Shoals on September 26, 1780 near modern-day Elizabethton, Tennessessee. He also portrays several eighteenth century Methodist ministers.
He will give a program in character on the historic march to King's Mountain, sharing a display of equipment used by eighteen century frontier fighters, along with the famous sermon and prayer of the Reverend Samuel Doak during the muster at Sycamore Shoals.
Refreshments will be served.
