Our next meeting

What:   Meeting of the Cherokee County Historical Society.

When:  Thursday, December 1, 2011.  Doors open at 5:00PM for people to bring in items relating to the history of Cedar Bluff. Meeting will begin 6:00PM with our guest speaker. 

Where:  The Cherokee County Historical Museum, 101 East Main Street, Centre, AL. 35960

Why: This meeting will be focusing on the history of Cedar Bluff. We invite anyone to bring in documents, photos, articles, artifacts or other items relating to the history of the town.  We will have scanners and a copier on hand to make copies of any documents and you can take your original items home. 

Guest Speaker:  Jim Lewis will be discussing the history of Cedar Bluff.  Jim is an honorary historian for the Society.  

 Refreshments will be served.

Round Mountain Furnace historical marker dedication

Its been a long wait, but the Round Mountain Furnace historical marker is now a reality. We had a great turnout for the dedication ceremony on 10/8 and the weather couldn't have been better. Thanks to everyone that helped make the marker possible.

September meeting

For those who missed it, Jerry Baker of WEIS 990 AM gave an excellent program at our latest meeting. It was great learning about the history of WEIS and reminiscing about some of the stories they have covered over the years. Thank you to WEIS for the service they have provided our community for the last 50 years.

Join us for the dedication of the Round Mountain Furnace historical marker

The Cherokee County Historical Society would like to invite you to the dedication of the Round Mountain Furnace historical marker in a ceremony that will begin on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 10:00AM. 

The Historical Society has arranged for Jim Bennett to give a brief history of the furnace and its significance.  He is the historian for the Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama located at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, Vice Chairman of the Alabama Historical Ironworks Commission and is also a noted author in the field of Alabama's historical ironworks. 

Round Mountain was the first furnace constructed in Cherokee County and the fourth in Alabama.  It was an important supplier during the Civil War with its iron being used in various munitions including cannon and projectiles. 

This historical marker will help bring public awareness of the furnace, its history and location. 

Directions: From Centre, take AL Hwy 411 to Leesburg, Turn right onto Alabama Hwy 68, travel 1 mile and then make a right onto AL Hwy 273, travel 4.7 miles and then turn right onto County Road 48.  Travel 2.6 miles and the marker will be on the left side of the road on the right of way.

Where:   The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce meeting room at the Gadsden State Cherokee Campus, 801 Cedar Bluff Road, Centre, AL. 35960. 

 

Why:   Bi-monthly meeting. We will have a guest speaker. 

Guest Speaker:  Jerry Baker will be our guest speaker. WEIS Radio is celebrating is 50th anniversary this year.  Mr. Baker will be discussing the history of the station as well as some of the news stories they have covered over the years. 

Other business that will be discussed includes the historical marker for Round Mountain Furnace, the Society's display space at the Cherokee County Historical Museum. 

 Refreshments will be served.

July meeting summary

Our guest speaker Pat Sherrill gave an excellent program that provided insight into life in Cherokee County during the mid-1800's. 

Mr. Sherrill provided documents to the audience relating to the diaries he was discussing, and he also brought along to items relating to the 1800's. 

Mr. Sherrill's program was followed by excellent refreshments that were provided by several lady members of the Society. 

Our July meeting

Guest Speaker:  Pat Sherrill will be discussing the diaries of Zillah Haynie Brandon of Gaylesville and Sarah Rousseau Espy of Leesburg.   The diaries date to the Civil War period and discuss the war, hardships, religion and a variety of other topics.

Other business that will be discussed includes the historical marker for Round Mountain Furnace, the Society's display space at the Cherokee County Historical Museum.  

 

Refreshments will be served.

Highlights from our May meeting

Guest speaker George Cobb spoke about the Revolutionary War including the events leading up to the Battle of King's Mountain.  

He then entertained with his spirited delivery of Reverend Samuel Doak's sermon and prayer that was given to soldiers prior to the battle.

This was followed by the presentation of the Society's awards.
